Beaufort and the surrounding Sea Islands offer a multitude of ways to experience the beauty, ecology, history and sea-heritage of the lowcountry. We are fortunate to have an organization that is dedicated to protecting that rich heritage.  A 501(c)3  nonprofit, the Port Royal Sound Foundation  is committed to ensuring the well-being of the Port Royal Sound, a body of water that is one of the most pristine in the country.  Their mission is to protect the waters by educating the public and increasing awareness. A Must-See & Do is their Maritime Center.  Located on the shores of the Chechessee River, between Hilton Head Island and Beaufort, the Maritime Center uses exhibits, activities and educational programming to highlight the area’s ecology, history, culture, art and recreation. From encounters with live fish, crabs and turtles to Eco boat tours, kayak trips, birding classes, special events, storytelling and guest speakers…there is so much to see and do at the Center.  It is the perfect venue to learn about our unique waters.   For more information on the PRSF, visit portroyalsoundfoundation.org.  And, mark your calendars for their annual STEAM Festival, August 25, 10AM to 3PM. This free, family friendly festival includes hands-on and engaging activities.
